First, despite what their Instagram feed shows and don’t judge yourself by how others look, as you don’t know what is real and what is fake. Spoiler alert, most of them are fake!
That being said to take a great looking selfie isn’t difficult if you know a few tricks.

First, you must decide if you want to use a filter or go natural in the photo. You can and should edit your photo before uploading it, where you can add a filter too, just don’t over edit so it looks unnatural. Snapchat is just one of the apps out there that has a lot of filters to choose from before taking your selfie, find the one you want to use, take the picture and be sure to save it to your camera roll. There are several other filter apps in the app store and Instagram has several filters in the editor you can use after you have taken the photo.

Next, you want to make sure there is good lighting. Natural light, with the sun behind you, so you aren’t squinting, is usually the best but isn’t always available. I purchased a Lumee light case for my iPhone and then another one when they came out with dual sided light cases, that work well in darker settings. Depending on the background effect you want you could use the camera flash or purchase a ring light that attaches to your camera.

Finally you will want to know how to strike a pose so your best features shine! Be sure to hold the phone no lower than eye level and slightly higher is better as that angle is great for casting shadows under your chin and makes everyone look slender and elegant. If you want to look even more svelte, stretch your neck and thrust your chin out.

Top Tips:
Natural lighting is your friend. Keep bright sun blocked behind you.
Remember to relax and have fun, the best poses are the ones that are naturally you.
Take lots of pictures. Choose the one you like best and then delete the rest.
